We are traveling to Switzerland in late August and first week of September. I looked online for seat reservations for September 4th going from St. Moritz to Zermatt and saw almost no seats available. It only showed one train car. Are there many train cars? Do seats become available?

Hi Tim and welcome to MySwissAlps!

The Glacier Express does indeed sell out in the summer. Cancellations do happen so that is a possibility.
I would try reserving through HappyRail here.

Do note that regular, regional trains follow the same route and reservations aren’t made on those trains – so you won’t miss out on the scenery if the train is sold out on your preferred date of travel.

You can find schedules for all trains running from St. Moritz to Zermatt on the timetable link here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable

Thank you. If we do not go on the Glacier Express, do the regularly scheduled trains run on the same tracks? Also, would we need reservations on those regularly scheduled trains? Tim

On all the Swiss ‘scenic routes’, all trains run on the same tracks. Modern marketing methods are employed to make a bit more money out of tourists, but I can assure you that with 58 years experience of Swiss trains, ‘ordinary trains’ are a perfectly good way of seeing Switzerland.

As Lucas has already mentioned, on ‘normal’ trains in Switzerland there is no need to reserve seats.

by the way Glacier Express sets have 6 cars, 2 1st class, one bar, 3 2nd class
