Hi, I’m having problems with seat reservation on Glacier Express. I bought my tickets through Rail Europe and they do not have seat reservation options and i need to book through Glacier Express website. My question now is they only have 6 seats available on my traveling date and i bought 8 tickets. Can it be possible that they can be overbooked? i’m all confused now as my tickets are non refundable and not exchangeable. I have emailed them but i didn’t get the answer that i’m looking for. It’s very frustrating as my trip is only a month away

    Hi Farisyah,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, seats on the Glacier Express can run out. The Glacier Express operates several services daily and you might want to try a different connection which has more seat availability. You can check the timetable via the links at https://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/gettingthere

If you are unable to book seats on the Glacier Express, you might want to contact Rail Europe directly and enquire if you can change the dates on your tickets.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Regards,

    Anna

Hi Anna, thank you for your reply. I’ve tried contacting rail europe to change the date but in the meantime I will just make my seat reservations for the next day before it run out again. Is it possible for me to contact SBB directly and make the changes?

    Hello Farisyah,

I’m sorry to hear that the Glacier Express doesn’t have enough seats left for your travel date. As for your tickets: normal Swiss train tickets can usually be changed or partially refunded. But you may have bought a cheaper Supersaver ticket (https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland) or Saver Day Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass). Both have restrictions concerning cancellation and refunds, and those restrictions always apply, regardless of where you buy them. This could explain why Rail Europe can’t change your booking without additional fees.

Does your ticket clearly state what kind of ticket it is? If you’re still unsure, you can upload a scan or screenshot here (with blurred personal data if your prefer).

In general it’s better to secure your seat reservations first, then get a rail pass or ticket for that specific date. But that’s hindsight and it doesn’t solve your problem. If you can’t change your tickets, you could still make the same journey without seat reservations in regular trains (see “Regular trains versus Glacier Express” at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress).
