In response to a question I had regarding the winter timetable for the Glacier Express, I received an e-mail from a representative at Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, stating “There will be two Glacier Express trains running from Zermatt to St.Moritz. The Excellence Class will also run during the Winter.” I infer that to mean there are two regular trains running PLUS one Excellence Class. Is that correct? The timetable lists two departure times for leaving Zermatt, the first at 8:52 and the second at 9:52. I would really like to be on the earlier train, but I do not want to travel Excellence Class. Thank you for any clarification you can provide. I am going to Salzburg and have to plan correctly for my transfer in Chur.

Hello Jwiles and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

The Excellence Class is just a special coach on the two departures you mention. It’s not a separate train.

If the timing if the Glacier Express doesn’t suit your plans you can travel from Zermatt to Chur in regional trains.

    Hi Jwiles1449,

you can read more about the differences between Glacier Express and regular trains at: http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress, under the “Regular trains versus Glacier Express”. If you do not travel on the Glacier Trains you need to change several time, but the landscape is the same with the local trains too.
