    Hi guys,

I’ve read on the Swissalps and the official page for Golden Express that seat reservation is not necessary for the Interlaken-Lucerne leg, however it is “recommended” during peak season. I’m going in early September and will be getting a Swiss Travel Pass which I understand covers the cost fully. Two questions please

    1. Should I still make a seat reservation on top of that, or I don’t have to worry about it?

    2. If I reserve a seat, do I pick the left or the right of the train for best views (going from Lucerne to Interlaken)?

    Thanks in advance!

    – Rin

    Hi Rin,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

That’s right, seat reservation on the GoldenPass train is not obligatory.

    1. The are regular services on the GoldenPass route between Lucerne and Interlaken. So seat reservation is usually not necessary: see https://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets and https://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. But if you are travelling in a big group and wish to be seated together, then it might be a good idea to book seats together. You can find details about this here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations

    2. From Lucerne to Interlaken Ost, sit on the right side of the train for the best view of the lakes. You can find more information about the route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere

    Regards,

    Anna

Luzern – Interlaken is not really the true ‘Golden Pass’ (which is just the section Spiez – Gstaad – Montreux.) . It is the low altitude Brünig Pass line. The trains are dubbed Luzern – Interlaken Express, are high capacity, long trains and frequent (every hour) so reservation is not needed.

Thanks very much Anna and 1960man – super helpful and really clarified the situation for me.
