Confirmation that in the draft timetable for 2021, the express trains (PE) Montreux – Zweisimmen will run direct through to Interlaken Ost with the gauge changing rolling stock.

The timetable is due to commence in December as usual (officially 13/12/20), but the authorities are hedging their bets and officially warning that the start of the 2021 timetable may be delayed due to Corona. Decision will be announced ‘in the summer’.

    From Montreux: PEs 4064 (07.35), 4068 (09.35), 4074 (12.35), 4078 (14.35).

    From Interlaken: PEs 4065 (09.08), 4069 (11.08), 4075 (14.08), 4079 (16.08)

This is a 50% reduction in the number of MOB trains offcially designated PE

Thanks 1960man. That’s something to look forward to, even if it will be delayed. This has been a very long project! Hopefully it’s worth it. Years ago I would have never guessed they opted for a “dynamic wheel” system instead of a third rail. I’m sure the tourists will like it, not having to change trains.

    Hi Arno –

<<“Years ago I would have never guessed they opted for a “dynamic wheel” system instead of a third rail.”>>

It is interesting to speculate about the relative capital costs of the two options. And, of course, the ongoing expense associated with the chosen approach.

I’m sure it was considered. I wonder if the information is publicly available?

    Hi Slowpoke,

Yes, it was definitely considered, but they opted for a system that’s unique in Switzerland according to this article: http://www.bernerzeitung.ch/region/oberland/ohne-umsteigen-von-montreux-nach-interlaken/story/21363676. Apparently it’s not only the track gauge that’s different, but also the safety and power systems. There is no official project website. Unlike many other projects of this scale, we have to rely on occasional newspaper articles and the new timetable.
