Hello — my wife and I on our honeymoon are hoping to do this option on the myswiss alps website, combining the Gotthard Panorama Express with the Glacier Express:

Lucerne to Zermatt: Lucerne – Göschenen (Gotthard Panorama Express), Göschenen – Andermatt (cogwheel train), Andermatt – Zermatt (Glacier Express).

Is there an easy way to book this whole excursion, for July 1st? I’m also trying to find what the whole thing would cost, to see if it makes sense for us to buy a rail pass. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Hello aaronandasia and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You will only need reservation on the Glacier Express. Not required on other trains.

A clearly mapped out itinerary is the basis for deciding which pass (if any) suits. Based on your itinerary you need to do the sums based on the cost of all your planned trips on trains, boats, cable cars etc. You can use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to work out the fares for any trip. When you go to buy a ticket the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare. With A Swiss Travel Pass it is free provided it is shown as free on the Area of Validity map ( PDF downloadable from http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity).

You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the spreadsheet and do the math.

    >> combining the Gotthard Panorama Express with the Glacier Express: Lucerne to Zermatt: Lucerne – Göschenen (Gotthard Panorama Express)

If you get the Gotthard Panorama Express from Luzern to Göschenen, you will need a reservation for the train sector Flüelen to Göschenen. This costs CHF 12 for what is only a 40-minute trip – not really worth it in my opinion.

You will arrive at Andermatt at 15:14. The next Glacier Express heading for Zermatt does not leave Andermatt until 17:08 (as you will have missed the one that left at 15:08). You could, of course, take a normal train to Zermatt instead.

It would be better to get to Andermatt via a boat and normal trains instead of the Gotthard Panorama Express. This way, you follow exactly the same route, avoid the Gotthard Panorama Express reservation fee, and can catch the Glacier Express leaving Andermatt for Zermatt at 14:08.

    How this could work:

    • Luzern-Flüelen by steam boat: Dep Luzern 9:12, Arr Flüelen 11:55. Reservations not possible.
    • Flüelen-Andermatt by regional trains: Dep Flüelen 12:16, Arr Andermatt 13:14 (with transfers at Erstfeld and Göschenen). Reservations not possible.
    • Andermatt-Zermatt on Glacier Express: Dep Andermatt 14:08, Arr Zermatt 17:10. Reservations are compulsory and cost CHF 43 each. As you will be travelling in high season, I would make this reservation as soon as they open i.e. 90 days before your travel date:
