Hi, I will be travelling in Switzerland during the first week of June. I noticed many sites suggest that hiking really only gets going in July. Are all the walking trails in the Jungfrau/Grindalwald region open by early June?

Hi Rgdelves and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can usually rely on hiking trails to be open around Grindelwald by mid- June each year but it really depends on the previous winter. In early June I would guess everything is open under 2000 meters and 50/50 chances to be open above that – you’ll need to check when you are there at the local tourist office.

Have a look at some popular hiking options around Grindelwald here (we note elevation so you can get an idea of what is probably open).

Thankyou Lucas, Thats good info. Another question. Being from Australia we are not really used to train travel. We plan to travel by train for 7 days in Switzerland from Stresa to Zermatt, Montreux, Grindelwald, Chur (Benini Express) to Tirano then onto Milan and through Italy for another 7 days by train. What would you suggest as the best rail pass to purchase? And is it necessary to prepurchase any or all of the tickets.

For Switzerland, an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass might be your best option.

If you have taking trains almost regularly in Italy as well you might want to consider a Eurail Select 2 country pass instead though. It will come down to your specific travel plans over your 2 weeks. If you only make a few train trips in Italy (and book far enough ahead) point to point tickets can be the way to go (further out you book the cheaper they are).

No pre-purchases necessary except you must make reservations for the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano (not matter what rail pass or ticket you have).
