Hello there, I’m thinking of going to Grindelwald in very early May 2019 but unsure of what is available. My trip is basically to sightsee with plans to visit Grindelwald First and Jungfrau. Will these be open at that time of year? I have read that Grindelwald will be quiet which I don’t mind but how quiet? Will shops/restaurants be open or is it completely deserted? Any information greatly appreciated.

Hi Renot and welcome to MySwissAlps!

It may be quieter than usual in May but that can be a nice thing before the tourist rush. It is the largest of the villages in the area so that best one for shoulder season stays. In early May there may be some closed restaurants at that time but it shouldn’t impact your enjoyment of the area too much. The later in the month the better. Hiking will be limited / closed due to snow levels.

You can check if any mountain trip is possible by going through our list here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/naturalsites/ mountains and clicking on the route tab for each mountain.

Jungfraujoch runs every day of the year and First will be operating as well.

    Hi Lucas

Thank you so much for your reply. That sounds absolutely perfect for me. I usually travel off season to avoid the crowds so I’m sure that time of year will suit me fine. Thanks again for your help. Off to book my flights!!

Another quick question. I’ve booked 3 nights in Grindelwald for mid May and now looking at another 3 nights in Luzern before heading to Zurich for the flight home. I’ve heard great reports about Luzern but just wondering would 3 nights be too much? Is there anywhere else in the area that would be recommended? Again it’s purely a sightseeing trip to take in the wonderful scenery and enjoy some amazing fondue. Thanks again.

    Hi Renot,

There is a a fair bit to do around Lucerne, I don’t think 3 nights is too much See here: http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne/activities

But, if you find you have done what you want there and have an extra day, I’d spend it in Bern: http://www.myswissalps.com/be rn
