Hi! We intend to travel from Venice to Tirano and then to Chur. Need following guidance:

1.We will buy rail ticket in Itlay from Venice to Tirano. From Tirano to Chur, can we use our 8 days STP pass or buy individual tickets if cheaper and use STP later.

2.Can we go by regional train to Chur rather than going by BE express, so as to avoid reservation charges? I understand scenic route will be the same.

3.Where can find detailed time table from Tirano to Chur for BE and regional train.

    Many Thanks.

    Hi Philip,

    1. You can use STP or point to point tickets. Whichever works out best for you.

    2. Yes.

    3. Use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you haven’t used it before it will pay to read the instructions on that page before delving into the timetable.

You will also find fares their but when you go to buy a ticket the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare. With A Swiss Travel Pass it is free provided it is shown as free on the Area of Validity map ( PDF downloadable from http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity).

The Bernina Express is denoted BEX on the timetables. There is one Bernina Express departure through to Chur at 14:25. See http://www.rhb.ch/en/panorami c-trains/bernina-express#info. You can also use that site to make reservations. The reservation charge is something like CHF10 or CHF14 from memory.

I like your 1st itinerary better. Any reason dates of each option are a month apart.

June would probably give you better weather than May.

To answer your questions (just my opinion you realise).

Do you think instead of going to Chur should go to ST.MORITZ ONLY ? How much time to spend in ST.MORITZ?

I would just go to Chur for 1 night and leave for Lucerne next day.

Can we travel by regional train to avoid seat reservation cost?

    Yes.

Do I need to adjust any above so as to stay one night in Montreux?

I would. If you drop the extra night in Chur/St Moritz you have a spare day. Plenty to do around Montreux (http://www.myswissalps.com/mo ntreux/activities).

    Happy travels!

    Appreciate your help.

    Philip
