hi , looking for advice/help on the most cost effective way to do the following.

we are travelling to Switzerland on 14th may, landing at Basel.

basel – Interlaken by train staying 4 nights, whilst here, we would like to do a boat cruise on lake Thun , visit St Beautis caves, take the Jungfrau express and onto Jungfrau Joch and visit Harder Kulm, also visit Briez and take a trip on the old cog wheel railway.

18th May , train to Zermatt stay 3 nights whilst here take a trip on Gornergrat cog wheel train

21st may , Take Glacier express to St Moritz 2 nights , do we need to book this in advance

23rd may , Take the train on Bernina line to Tirano (italy) where we collect a hire car to continue our hols.

The hotel at interlaken does a local visitor pass, is this an option?

Are we better off booking as we go or purchasing a travel pass at Basel ?

    Finding it all quite confusing

    Many thanks in advance Donita

Hi Donita, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

In order to know which pass is most economical for your itinerary you will need to plan out all your specific trips and compare prices of tickets vs. both passes. We have a web page on how to choose the best rail pass to help you with the math.

You need to book your seats for the Glacier Express in advance which you can do here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/tickets. If you decide to purchase a rail pass you will have free or discounted traveling. The reservation can be made within 90 days of an intended date of departure.

You mean that you will get a Guest Card in Interlaken? You will get this one for free: http://www.myswissalps.com/in terlaken/hotels. You can read more about this card and where it’s valid here. You can use this one in combination with another Swiss rail pass which will cover much more.

    Hi Donita,

    >> we are travelling to Switzerland on 14th may, landing at Basel. basel – Interlaken by train staying 4 nights, whilst here, we would like to … visit Briez and take a trip on the old cog wheel railway.

The train from Brienz to the Brienzer Rothorn does not recommence after the winter break until 2 June.

    >> St Moritz 2 nights

Check to see if your hotel offers the free Mountain Railways Includedcard. If it does, that would get you a free trip on the Diavolezza cable car, which takes you up to view the Diavolezza glacier. (That is the only mountain transport that will be operating while you are there, as everything else is closed for maintenance.) For directions on how to get there, please see the following page:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/cable-car-to-piz-nair-via-corviglia

    >> 23rd may , Take the train on Bernina line to Tirano (italy)

If you are travelling on the Bernina Express, reservations are mandatory and cost CHF 14 per seat. You can make reservations here:

    http://www.rhb.ch/en/tickets-travelcards/bernina-express-booking/bernina-express

You could also choose to travel on a regional train instead, on which reservations are not needed (and are actually not even possible).
