Hi, We were travelling to Switzerland over the Christmas New Year holidays. We are flying from London to Zurich and were intending covering Bern, Lucerne, Zermatt and St Moritz. After Switzerland we are headed to France. We want to do all the travel in Switzerland by train. I am trying to work out whether to go from Zurich to St Moritz then do the Glacier Express and go onto the other Swiss towns and then France. OR do we go from Zurich to Zermatt and do the Glacier Express from that direction. The key issue is where you go from St Moritz - ie what trains are available to connect you elsewhere towards France without unduly doubling back on where we will have already been? Where can I go from St Moritz?

Hi CarolynV,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! Since you're headed for France it makes sense to work into that direction, so that would be Zurich - Lucerne - St. Moritz - Glacier Express to Zermatt. From there it depends on where in France you are going to. Bern can be done as a day trip from Lucerne, or en route from Zermatt to Paris if that's where you're going.

Please see here for further details:

Your desire to visit Bern Luzern St Moritz Zermatt - 'then France' will require some doubling back at the minimum, because of the geography. It is illogical and wasteful not to start with Zurich - St Moritz which is a standard journey for many Swiss people and visitors. To cover the complete Glacier Express you would then go St Moritz - Zermatt, but then you need to work out how to cover Bern and Luzern, as Luzern is back northwest from Zermatt (but Bern and Luzern are only 1 hour apart by train)
