Is the Morteratsch glacier hike feasible to do in December with an 8 year old? We would like to combine this with a day trip on the bernina express from Bergun as follows;

Leave Bernina Express Bergun 9.46 arrive Tirano 12.49

Take regular train in Tirano at 13.00, arrive in Morteratsch 14.39

do the hike and take a regular train back to Bergun with change in Pontresina and Samedan, e.g. at 17.40

we do realize that the way back from Morteratsch will be in the dark, but we have seen that leg in the morning

Does this sound like a good plan or not?

Hi lfoubert,

I haven't done the hike myself, but it is rated as an easy, wide trail that should be fine for your child. Read more details about the hike on our website here and another description on MySwitzerland.com here including information about children's activities along the hike - so it should be fun.

I did this hike in June 2015. We took the Bernina Express from Pontresina to Tirano and the regular train back. The MySwissAlps Moderators had suggested the hike and it was one of the highlights of our trip. You have to press a button for the train to stop at Morteratsch station. It doesn’t stop automatically. The hike is about 6 miles round trip. The path is wide and flat and the view of the glacier is breathtaking. Because it was summer, the glacier had receded quite a bit. Just be prepared for it to take longer than you expect-especially with an 8 year old. Also make sure you find out when the last train to Pontresina leaves.
