We are coming to Switzerland in early May. We are interested in hiking in the Jungfrau area as well as taking the summit excursion via cable car or cogwheel.... We have heard some of these trails and cable cars/areas might be closed at this time of year? Can anyone advise? Also, would Zermatt have closings during this time of year as well?

Thank you

Hello LoriO and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Have a look at the post from Alpenrose on this thread www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/gondolarail-access-to-mountains-in-aprilmay-2018.

At Zermatt the cable-way to Klein Matterhorn/Glacier Paradise will be closed for maintenance between Trockener Steg and Klein Matterhorn from 23 April to 11 May 2018. Gornergrat railway will be operating. You can check what else will be running here www.matterhornparadise .ch/en/timetable or use the Swiss Train Timetable (www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to confirm any specific journey on a given travel date.

Also read the post by Kim on this thread www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/traveling-to-berner-oberland-in-late-may. I know you are travelling early May but spring could be delayed on account of the massive snowfalls that have been experienced this winter.

Thanks for the helpful info! We will be staying in the Bernese Oberland area between May5-8; right now we have reservations in Murren, but I keep hearing that many trails & lifts might be closed. Would we have more options if we stayed down the mountain in Lauterbrunnen instead? Or where would the best place for hiking & sightseeing be during that time?

In other words, where should we stay as our home base during that time? Murren or Lauterbrunnen or?

I’d prefer Wengen. Only 15 minutes from Lauterbrunnen but with magnificent scenery.

Hi LoriO,

It wouldn't make any difference where to stay. Wengen, Murren and Lauterbrunnen are all close together. To rockoyster's point, most visitors of this forum prefer Wengen.
