Hi guys, my husband and I will be visiting Switzerland from 19 to 29 Dec.

I have previously attached our tentative itinerary in one of my earlier threads. I understand that only moderate low-altitude hikings at mountains are advisable during winter? There are 2 places we would love to cover during our trip and I would appreciate your thoughts if they are advisable:

20 Dec (Zermatt) – hike from Rotenboden to Riffelalp

24 Dec (Grindelwald) – hike from Grindelwald First to Lake Bachalpsee

Hi kps3006,

The Zermatt hike is open as a winter hiking trail so it is doable just be prepared: http://www.zermatt.ch/en/Media/Planning-hikes-tours/Rotenboden-Riffelberg

I’m not so sure about the hike to Bachalpsee though. It is probably accessible again however under snow and ice you might not know the lake is there. 😉 http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/winter-hiking/

Hi pks3006,

I was looking to hike to Riffelsee and Bachalspee whilst there this May but both trails and lakes were under metres of snow!!

Yes, I would guess the conditions wouldn’t allow snowshoeing/winter hiking at that time of year.

You really need peak winter or peak summer to get the most out of the mountain areas!
