We will be in Lauterbrunnen Switzerland for two days , arriving September 10 pm and leaving September 13 am. we will be staying at Hotel Staubbach and have questions about traveling to The Shilthorn. We would like to take the earliest trip available, and,by the way, we are healthy and motivated over 60 year-olds!!….

*Do we need to purchase train/gondola tickets in advance or can we purchase at each station to allow us to be more flexible about weather conditions??

*We want to hike part of the way up…..are there preferred hikes through alpine meadows between train/gondola stops.

    * what are “must see/do” highlights

*What is the most scenic route to the top?

*Anything else we should know about this trip.

Hi Mast lloyd and welcome to MySwissAlps!

No advanced purcahse is needed no. There is a reservation process created earlier this year but by mid September I wouldn’t be concerned about it. If you are traveling by train and other means of public transport in Switzerland, have you looked into a rail pass? The Swiss Travel Pass covers most train travel as well as the trip up to Schilthorn: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

There are some nice hikes between Lauterbrunnen and Murren that you might enjoy:

If you’d like more information on Schilthorn look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn
I think the most scenic way to the top is the cable car – I’m not fit enough to try the hike!
