How far in advance to book Swiss train tickets

My husband and I have made a 1st class reservation on the Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur on September 9th. I have been comparing the prices of the Saver Day Pass with the BE tickets and other SBB tickets as we are also taking a regional train from Chur to Zermatt (via Andermatt) on the 10th and from Zermatt to Geneva Airport on the 11th. How far in advance should we purchase the tickets? Will the prices increase very much? Ideally we would like flexibility if our plans change – we may decide to take a regional train and forgo the BE reservation fee and not be committed to a specific time. Should we purchase now or can we purchase at the station or closer to the time we leave?

    Thank you.

Hi N payne and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

Saver Day Pass can run out and varies by demand and the purchase date. Buying early means normally cheaper, but that’s not guaranteed: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price

Point to point tickets have fixed price and you can buy them whenever you want even before your train trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland/price. These tickets give you some flexibility, meaning that you can travel anytime on that day.

There are the Supersaver Tickets, these are also point to point tickets but they are cheaper and can also run out and the price varies by demand. If you buy these then you lose flexibility and you have to travel on the chosen train. If you miss the train you lose the ticket.

If you are travelling more days you might like to have a look at other rail passes like Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass. We have a great calculation spreadsheet at http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass, that will help you to compare your options. This also gives you flexibility and is very comfortable to use.

I hope I’ve answered your question. In case not please feel free to come back.

    Ildiko
