We are traveling by train with our two children (4 and 11) from Visp to Zermatt (and then up the Gornergrat) and back again. This is the only train trip we are anticipating taking. I am completely confused however by all the “pass” options, and we were thinking of the half-fare card option – but is each adult required to have one? If that is the case then it wouldn’t appear to be any cost savings for us, as I think our four year old daughter is going to ride from free from Visp to Zermat (if I am reading this correctly) just by virtue of being little and cute. Thanks for your help!

Hi Elzie and welcome to MySwissAlps!

For a family of four for a day only doing the trip you’re describing, the Half Fare Card would not be suitable, this would only be suitable if you’re spending more time in Switzerland and travelling longer distances.

You would probably benefit more from a Saver Day Pass, but you would need to compare it against doing the trip from door to door. We have an excel spreadsheet you can use to do the math on this link:

More information on the Saver Day Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass

If the adults have a Swiss Travel System pass, you can get a Swiss Family card where your children travel for free (for your 11 year old as the 4 year old can travel for free): http://www.myswissalps.com/sw issfamilycard

For other child discounts you can go to: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/discounts

Hope this helps and good luck planning your trip!

    Maria.

    Hi

Just thought I would add to Maria’s reply that you both have to buy a Pass and that the fare shown on the SBB website is the 50% fare as it is assumed that you have a Half Fare Card.

Hope you enjoy your trip to Switzerland.

    Jane
