Four of us (active seniors) will have about 6 hours free while in the Lauterbrunnen area (from noon to 6 p.m. or so.)

I am afraid we may have too many things that we want to do that day!? We’d like to take the train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen to see the waterfalls. Should we then hike around the falls for an hour or 2, or would it be better to rent e-bikes (which we have never done before)?

We’d also like to see and walk around Murren (or Wengen?) and take the trams up the Schilthorn and do the Thrill Walk up there before returning to Interlaken for a 7:00 dinner.

Can we fit this all in, and, if so, would it be better to go to the Schilthorn earlier in the afternoon or finish up there? Is it usually nicer at the higher altitudes earlier in the day, or doesn’t it matter?

Lastly, if we don’t have time to do all three activities that afternoon, which should we not miss? If the weather is good the next day, we will be going the Top of Europe/Jungfrau. Is that too much like going to the 007 Schilthorn area, or are they very different?

Thank you so much for helping us sort through all these options!

    Hi CapeCodTeach,

The e-bikes sounds like a great option!

But you can also take the train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and hike to the waterfalls, then take the cable car from Stechelberg to Schilthorn. The cable car runs until 5 or 5.30 so might be a good idea to do this trip early. If you have time, from Schilthorn you can take a different cable car down to Mürren then take the cog train and Grutschalp funicular down to Lauterbrunnen. I think 6 hours is a fairly reasonable time to complete this circuit. Otherwise I would probably skip Schilthorn and focus on exploring the villages of Lauterbrunnen and Murren. You can find details in the following links:

Hope this gives you some ideas to add to your itinerary.

    Regards,

    Anna

Wow! This sounds awesome. Thank you for your quick reply! Your comments and the links that you sent are very helpful.

I could not figure out how far the hike to the waterfalls and then on to pick up the cable car to Stechelberg would be. Do you have an idea of the distance or how much time it would take to walk or bike that route?

I imagine we could cover a larger area faster on e-bikes, but am I correct in assuming that we would have to retrace our steps to return the bikes where we got them in Lauterbrunnen?

Would having the bikes make going behind the waterfalls more difficult? There are certainly pros and cons for both of those options (bike vs. hike) and it’s hard because I can’t visualize the path… Would we be biking on the same path others use for hiking?

Lastly, if we end up doing a round trip from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg to Schilthorn to Murren and finally back to Interlaken for dinner 😳, should we buy a special train pass, or since it’s just one day, would we be better off just buying individual train and cable car tickets?

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge of these details with us!

    Hi CapeCod Teach,

It takes about 45 mins to walk from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, so with an e-bike should take less time. Details of the route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/lauterbrunnen-stechelberg/route

If you plan to do the whole circuit, you can get a return ticket at the train station (route: Interlaken – Lauterbrunnen – Stechelberg – Murren – Lauterbrunnen -Interlaken). You might need to pay separately for the cable car tickets.

Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna
