It’s me again! We would like to go to the Jungfraujoch on Thursday from Ruschlikon. Can you tell me the cheapest way to go using a half fare pass? It’s confusing…do we head to Grindlewald by train and if so, what do we do after that? Do we go up one way and down another? Again, completely confused. We spend days on trying to figure this stuff out online and become even more confused. So many different passes and names of places…and then the names of places have more names after them. Thank you!

    Hi Moka,

To get to Jungfraujoch, you need to travel to Zurich HB (Zurich central station) and take the train to Grindelwald Terminal. If you take the Intercity Train 8 at 0702 from Zurich HB, you will reach Grindelwald Terminal at 0940. You will need to switch trains in Bern and Interlaken Ost. Please use the SBB timetable to search for this connection or for other connections, if you plan to arrive earlier or later.

At Grindelwald Terminal, take the cable car to Eigergletscher and from here the Jungfraubahn cogwheel train will take you to Jungfraujoch. You can return the same way or take the same cogwheel train back to Lauterbrunnen via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. From Lauterbrunnen, there are regular trains to Interlaken and Zurich. The route to Jungfraujoch is explained in detail here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere

For tickets to Jungfraujoch, you can purchase them at the station or online through http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets. Here’s a direct link: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com. I think it’s about CHF93.80 with the Swiss Half Fare Card. You might be able to find Supersaver tickets online but do take note that Supersaver tickets are restricted and non-refundable if you miss your connections: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland

Hope this helps you plan your trip.

    Regards,

    Anna

Fabulous and easy to follow! On your link to buy the ticket I notice we can choose to go up from Grindlewald and down to Wengen, which we would like to do. But there is no mention that we can use the gondola (Eiger Express) from Grindlewald. Is this automatically included and we can use when we get there? Thanks! Susie

    Hi Moka,

If you plan to take a different route back i.e. the Eiger Express cable car instead of the cogwheel train to Wengen, you have to buy two separate tickets. If this is too confusing to buy online, it’s best to get the tickets at the Grindelwald station or terminal just before your trip to Jungfraujoch. Mention that you would like to do a round trip and you will be issued a return ticket that is valid for both routes.

    Regards,

    Anna

Hi Moka! There’s no price difference beween the several routes to reach Jungfraujoch. So round trip tickets bought via https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com should also include the Eiger Express. I see they don’t explicitly mention this, so I’ll look into it and get back to you.

Thank you, Anna. You have been exceptionally helpful! We have pitched our tickets….one site allowed to choose how to go up and down, the other site didn’t. And by the time we finally got the tickets yesterday the first site had none left. And then we had to cancel several due to our misunderstanding….it had been a nightmare but is done for tomorrow.

But I do have one more question. When we bought the top of Europe tickets they have you estimate a time to come down. We read about a hike so we chose 4 hours and then return down. Now that we are thinking about it we realize we are Floridians (sea level) and seniors and we may be sick….and tired after 4-5 hours on the train to get there. Can we leave sooner? I’m afraid now we will be sitting up there, cold and sick for 4 hours. Ugh. Thanks, Anna.

    Hi Moka,

I believe you have purchased your Jungfraujoch tickets with seat reservation – if there is a time indicated on your tickets. If you wish to leave earlier you can do it, the only thing is that people with seat reservations will be called first to get on the train and those, without reservation, can get on only after them, if there are still places. But no worries, there will be still places for you, if not on that train then the next after it. The point is that you do not need to wait hours to be able to come down.

If you are not used to a high altitude then hiking over 3000 m will be challenging, I think. At http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/preparation, you’ll find some useful tips for hiking in the Swiss Alps. Also, have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/etiquette and http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch (‘Preparation’ section).

    Take care,
    Ildiko
