Hello Anjab and Welcome to MySwissAlps,
Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel.
Search for Zermatt to Luzern via Kandersteg and Meiringen.
You will then travel between Brig and Spiez on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley.
From Spiez you will be on the Golden Pass route.
If you want to cover the entire Golden Pass route you would need to go first to Montreux then from there to Luzern via Zweisimmen and Meiringen. That will take a lot longer than the first option I described.
AnjanbParticipant19 posts18 July 2019 at 11:33:51 #918116Thank you for your guidance
My rail ride plans are
From Zurich to Chur,Chur to Zermatt by Glacier express, then golden pass line to Luzern from Zermatt as suggested by you, then Luzern to Zurich Airport. In addition I shall have plans to have mountain cable ride at Luzern and Zermett. Will it be beneficial to buy swiss pass . If yes ,what would suit the best.

To find out in detail if a Swiss Travel Pass could be worth while, which it quite often is, please use the spreadsheet in below link:
– http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpassFor details on the Swiss Travel Pass check all tabs of below link, especially the map in the “Where it’s valid” tab for detailed validity:
– http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpassIf you use the timetable below or the one provided by Rockoyster you will find the standard point-to-point ticket prices for each leg of the journey, which are by default the half fare prices, so double the price for your spreadsheet calculations.

StephRemoved userParticipant72625 posts18 July 2019 at 23:42:12 #918118Be careful; if you don’t go the ‘long’ way via Montreux you won’t traverse the actual Golden Pass ** itself, which is the Montreux – Zweisimmen railway.
You can do that in one day and get to Luzern by 19.00
The best schedule is to depart at 08.37 from Zermatt, change into a Geneva bound IR train at Visp to get to Montreux, then take the GoldenPass Panoramic at 11.44 from Montreux which will link in to the rest of the route, arriving in Luzern at 16.55
The benefit of going this way is that you get additional lakeside scenery as you approach Montreux from Visp
** The Golden Pass rail route:
Current tourist branding can be confusing
The true Goldenpass is just the MOB railway Zweisimmen – Montreux.
The Luzern – Interlaken railway is actually the Brünig Pass line operated by Zentralbahn (ZB), which dubs the regular trains “Luzern – Interlaken Express’. It’s OK but not spectacular scenery
A few facts about the Montreux – Zweisimmen railway – ie the MOB (Montreux-Oberland – Bernois):
The Golden Pass is historically only Montreux – Zweisimmen, only more recent marketing branding takes the ‘Goldenpass route’ east of Zweisimmen to Interlaken and beyond to Luzern.
The Golden Pass is the touristic branding for the Montreux – Oberland Bernois (MOB) railway but after a few years of favouring ‘Goldenpass services’, the company decided it was losing its tradition and has reverted to putting the Chemin de Fer Montreux – Oberland Bernois name on publicity and train coaches.
MOB pioneered the Panoramic coach concept on Swiss trains, starting in 1976.

I am little confused. If I have to choose between Mt. Titilis and Jaunfraujongch cable ride. Which one to be chosen ?
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts19 July 2019 at 11:02:30 #918120Titlis is not that far from Luzern. Jungfraujoch is not close to Luzern and is a very expensive train in a tunnel, not a “cable ride”.
See:
AnjanbParticipant19 posts19 July 2019 at 12:58:32 #918121Which one is preferred ? I could stay in Interlaken to iride Jangfraujoch.
AnnikaModerator7124 posts19 July 2019 at 14:08:38 #918122Hi Anjanb,
That’s very personal I’m afraid. Some prefer Titlis, some Jungfraujoch. You’d best check the links provided by Rockoyster and decide for yourself. You’ll probably like both, so just incorporate the trip that suits your itinerary best.
AnjanbParticipant19 posts24 July 2019 at 7:13:44 #918123I have changed my travel plan from luzern to Zermatt.
I am planning to take Gotthard panorama to Goschenen by boat till fluelen. Then again by train to Andermatt. From their Glacier express to Zermatt. Is this plan ok to enjoy different shades of scenic beauty of switzerland.
For this trip I need to change platform 3 to 11 at Goschenen to change to R train from Gotthard panoram. Time 9 minutes.
At AnderMatt Andermatt to Ander Matt platform 1 to catch glacier express. Time is 2 minutes.
I shall have luggage with me and also accompanied by Senior Citizen. Those minutes shall be sufficient to change train.
Shall be highly obliged if someone could guide us.
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts24 July 2019 at 7:27:10 #918124A two minute connection is not something I would base my travel plans around. Even SBB couldn’t guarantee that. And because you will have to make reservations for the Glacier Express I just wouldn’t risk it. 9 minutes is easy but 2 minutes is too tight in my opinion.
You can always catch regional trains from Andermatt to Zermatt. They run regularly, the scenery is the same, reservations are not required. Note that one of the best parts of the GEX is between Chur and Andermatt over the Oberalp Pass. You will miss that.
Also note that in October there is only one traditional paddle steamer from Luzern to Flüelen except on Sundays and Public Holidays. The other boats are regular diese-engined boats. See timetable.
AnjanbParticipant19 posts24 July 2019 at 9:38:54 #918125Thank you to enlighten me about difficulties and also about glacier express.
As suggested I shall board Glacier express from Chur and reach Zermatt around 18 hours. What We could do in the evening at Zermatt.
AnnikaModerator7124 posts24 July 2019 at 12:42:27 #918126Hi Anjanb,
The option of regular trains is discussed under “Regular trains versus Glacier Express” at http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress.
There won’t be that much outdoor activities in Zermatt in October after 18 pm. The sun will set pretty early, so a village walk (http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/zermatt) could still be interesting for the atmosphere but not so much for mountain views. You’d best enjoy dinner, relax a bit and start exploring the area the next day (http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt/activities).
AnjanbParticipant19 posts24 July 2019 at 13:25:58 #918127Can we cover both Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn mountain riden the same day I.e next day if we start early.
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts24 July 2019 at 20:06:22 #918128Yes.
AnnikaModerator7124 posts25 July 2019 at 4:58:06 #918129Hi Anjanb. That’s possible indeed. Please use the timetable that’s been mentioned before, and http://www.myswissalps.com/go rnergrat/gettingthere and http://www.myswissalps.com/kl einmatterhorn/gettingt here.

AnjanbParticipant19 posts25 July 2019 at 9:00:57 #918132On reaching Zermatt from where can I procure swiss travel pass. Is price same in all places ?Can I buy it from hotel.
AnjanbParticipant19 posts25 July 2019 at 13:50:00 #918133Is accomodation with heating facility required in room in middle of October.
Is it normal that all facilities are equipped with heating.
Please guide to book accommodation.
AnnikaModerator7124 posts26 July 2019 at 5:23:52 #918134Hi Anjanb,
You’d best buy your Swiss Travel Pass online in advance through one of the retailers at http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price. That way, you can profit from free traveling right away (including your trip to Zermatt). It’s not available at hotels. Another advantage of buying online is that you’ll have an electronic PDF backup, which is great in case of loss or damage of your printed paper pass.
Yes, all facilities should have heating. If you need specific help in searching for proper accommodation, please open a new topic in the Accomodation forum as explained above.
