On July 20, I’m traveling from Paris to Bern. I’ll be in Bern for five days . In addition to spending a day or so in Bern, I’m planning to take day trips to Thun, Interlaken, Meiringen, Grindelwald, etc. I did some quick math and the 4 day pass looks to be comparable in price to single trip tickets but with greater flexibility. The 4 day pass will cover the days in/around Bern. Any recommendations on how to save on my travel days to and from Paris?

Hi Sonofadam and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Which 4 day rail pass are you talking about? The Swiss Travel Pass? https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass

If you are staying around Bern only, regular tickets may be ok, but you can also look at the Regional Pass – Bernese Oberland as well: https://www.myswissalp s.com/regionalpassbern eseoberland

The best rail pass for you will depend on your day to day itinerary. Once you know all trips you will take each day (train, boat, cable car etc) then you can check the cost of point to point tickets to various rail passes to see which is really the best for you. As you say the flexibility of a rail pass is often worth buying it even if it is a few Swiss Franc more.

Check ticket prices on the Swiss railways timetable here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable
The first price you see is the 1/2 fare price, so double it for the regular fare.

Thanks Lucas. Yes, I was referring to the 4-day Swiss Travel Pass. I will get more specific on my daily itinerary then compare passes. I’ve been thinking about taking the TGV from Paris to Basel then another train to Bern. Is that the best option and should I just purchase single trip tickets from Basel to Bern?

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass that starts on your day of arrival in Switzerland then you can just buy a ticket to Basel (border town) and then change onto any train you like to Bern. If you want to start your rail pass (or don’t buy one) for the day after, then you can buy a ticket to Bern (with a change in Basel).
