Is it correct that we need a reservation on the Gotthard Scenic Express before we can buy tickets? Can we do all of this ( reservation and tickets) at Lugano on the day of travel before 9.22am when the train leaves for Luzern? or should it all be done online beforehand? . We will be travelling on June 6. Would appreciate guidance with this . Chris

    Hello Chris,

You can make reservations for the Gotthard Panorama Express at bit.ly/2HHB2Ev. You need to book a seat Lugano to Flüelen via Göschenen departing 9:22.

You can buy a ticket anytime anytime until you board the train or perhaps you have a rail pass. It is 1st Class only.

Thanks so much RockOyster. Looks like I need to have a Swiss Pass Account to be able to make a Gotthard train reservation. If I’m going to buy a Half Fare Pass, do I need that prior to making bookings as well? It’s not simple for an outsider ! Chris

    Hi Chris,

Seat reservations are completely different from tickets of travel passes. You need a reservation on that train. Then you can decide whether a point to point ticket or a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass) or a Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard) suits your itinerary best.

You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.

    Hi Chris

As Rockoyster has explained, you need to secure a reservation on the train first then actually have a valid pass or ticket that covers the route. You can visit this link to read all about it: http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress/ tickets

You will find links to resellers for the reservations as well as more information on the passes from Rockoyster’s link.

These are separate transactions as often people are not just taking that train but also doing other trips during their visit to Switzerland.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

    Maria.

The GPE doesn’t really add much to the ‘Gotthard’ experience

It is simpler to buy a Swiss rail ticket or Swiss travel Pass and use ordinary regional trains that don’t require seat reservations. This gives you the flexibility to travel at any time rather than being fixed to the Gotthard Panorama Express (GPE) that only runs once a day, is 1st class only and requires seat reservations.
