Hi Lynnie2211 and welcome to MySwissAlps!
There are some great mountains near Lucerne, but not what are traditionally considered the “Swiss Alps”.
For that, you would want to travel to the Jungfrau region (the main town is Interlaken) which would be close to 3 hours by train from Zurich (or 2 from Lucerne). Use the Swiss railways timetable to plan any trips. There would be no need to rent a car to explore the areas – trains are much more convenient in Switzerland.

Hi Linn1e2211-
In addition to the timetable noted in Lucas’ comments, this map may be useful:

Zürich is a very nice and quite cosmopolitan city, but is far from the Alps and is not noted for its scenic beauty. Unless you have definite ideas about what you want to do in Zürich, you might instead consider a day or two in Luzern, with the remainder- 2 or 3 days- in the Jungfrau region.
In that region, the best scenery is in the villages several miles from Interlaken, some of which are car free.
You might look at Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Mürren as possibilities. All are accessible by frequent trains from Interlaken Ost.
