Hi all, I would love your opinion…

I am planning our June/July 2018 trip. We will get the golden pass ticket for Mt Pilatus and therefore take the boat ride on Lake Lucerne as part of that excursion. The following day we will travel to Como by train. It would be nice to get to Como early in the da as we are renting a car and driving to Varenna from there. BUT, I also have read such great reviews of the Gotthard Panoramic Express. I’m torn on what to do.

Do you feel the GPE train is not to be missed? Since we will have just taken a boat on Lake Lucerne the day before wouldn’t that section be a little redundant? Will the Trentitalia fast train be at least a little scenic? I realize that route involves a tunnel but I’m ok with that. Also, we will have another scenic trip from Venice to Salzburg later in the trip so we will at some point get a “scenic” train ride.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Melissa

    Hello Melissa,

You don’t have to take the GPE to follow the same route.

You can take an earlier ferry and regular train. Or skip the boat altogether. To experience the same train route go via Göschenen.

The scenery from the lake is much more impressive between Lucerne and Flüelen than the Alpnachstad trip.
