hello myswissalp experts, i am arriving Switzerland in 2 weeks. Planning to spend 4 nights at Grindelwald (hike around Jungfrau, First, Wengen and Launderbrunnen), then 4 nights at Zermatt (for Matterhorn, glacier paradise, Lake Riffelsee, and Gornergrat). Finally 2 nights at Zurich, before flying back home.

I understand I will pass by Visp on the way to Zermatt from Grindelwald by train (sbb). Now wondering if it would be worthwhile to venture over to Brig (Riederalp & Bettermeralp) for a day trip. Is it feasible to leave luggage at train station and spend few hours at Riederalp before Zermatt? Would you suggest I cut down a night from Grindelwald or Zermatt and spend at Brig instead?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Hello Joanneyu518 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

I definitely think it is worth a visit, especially as you’re kind of travelling past anyway, as you say. However it’s of course up to you to decide if you would want to add another base to your trip.

Hi Steph, this is very helpful, thanks for the quick response.

Is it too aggressive to do Riederalp as a day trip on the way? I was thinking if it would be possible to leave luggage at train station and spend few hours there only before heading to Zermatt.

    Thanks for the response.

    Hello Joanneyu518,

This makes sense, but of course I don’t know what is an acceptable day for you and when you want to arrive in Zermatt. Please use the timetable above to research detailed travelling times, including the detour it’s around 4 hours plus the time you spend there.

    Best,
    Steph
