Hi, we are traveling from Rome to Zermatt , beginning of January (6 nights in Zermatt, 2 adults and 2 kids) then from Zermatt to Zurich so we can fly to London, need help to see ifs it’s worth getting the Swiss Travel Pass as we are traveling by rail from Rome to Zermatt and back to Zurich, Is it any cheaper with the Swiss Pass or should we just buy the rail tickets from Rome station before we go , thanks.

    Hello Caneknife,

An 8 day Swiss Travel Pass would cover the Swiss portion of you inbound trip from Rome, meaning that Domodossola-Zermatt is for free. It will also cover Zermatt-Zurich on your outbound trip. So yes, this choice seems to make sense. You’d best study the Swiss Travel Pass validity information to find out what’s covered and discounted: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity.

You can consider the Swiss Half Fare Card as an alternative, although it’s a bit less convenient as you’ll have to get tickets for each journey: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard. Only detailed calculations will show which option is most economical for your specific needs: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.

In any case, you’ll need additional full fare tickets for Rome-Domdossola: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy.

What are you doing in Zermatt for 6 nights? If you are on a ski holiday then I would think an 8-day Swiss Travel Pass would be wasted during that time.

By the way your kids (if they are <16 >5) will travel free with a Swiss Family Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw issfamilycard) which is available for free when acquired in conjunction with a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass) or Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard).

The other things you might want to do at Zermatt, like take the Gornergrat train or visit Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are discounted 50% with the Swiss Travel Pass – same as with the Swiss Half-fare Card. Either way you still have to but tickets so the only two journeys where the convenience of the STP kicks in is from to Domodossola to Zermatt and from Zermatt to Zurich.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) buy tickets for the train journeys. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.
