Hello! We hope to travel to Switzerland during August 2020 for a week (or thereabouts).

We are two adults and two young children who will then be 4 and 6. We are hoping for fresh air, dramatic views, waterfalls, and to see traditional alpine life (or what remains of it). Proper chocolate box Switzerland in other words!

We will fly into Zürich and from what I can see, the Jungfraujoch region may be the best place to focus our trip? the advice I’m after is this;

– if we concentrate on this region, is it best to stay in one base for the whole time? (Eg Wengen or Lauterbrunnen)? Or is there anything to be gained by splitting our time into two of these locations? I know the towns around there are local to each other but it’s hard to judge the distances in terms of travel time and also if staying in one vs another offers a different experience?

– which of the towns in the area would allow us the most beautiful scenery and also has local style restaurants and perhaps a playground for the kids?

– is there another region we’d be crazy to miss or does Jungfraujoch really have it all (especially for a weeks stay)?

– any hotels especially good for the children? Or that have pools with a view etc?

Thank you! I know these are basic questions and I ought to read all the comprehensive advice already offered on these pages, it’s just the aforementioned children make internet browsing a rare luxury!! 😊

You cannot go wrong in that region. I like to stay in one spot and do day trips but you could perhaps split it into two to prevent extra transport. For example, first part in Interlaken, second in Wengen. This is personal preference.

I’m smitten with Murren but to go on day trips you have to descend into the valley and take a cable car and bus to Lauterbrunnen or a train and cable car. We didnt mind. You can get half fare cards and then Schiltorn holiday passes for adults and kids. Wengen is bigger. We went with quaint in smaller Murren. The tourists disappear in the evening.

Self catering apartments are best for our family. Some hotels have a meal plan for dinner. My kids dont appreciate dinner out and long waits. I find it relaxing until they start getting bored and overtired! So, we cooked half the time and ate out half. Decide your needs and choose a accommodations accordingly.

Most are quite pricey.

There are pools at some hotels outside but Wengen and Murren have indoor pools that are free with your tourist card.
Murren has a soccer field and ping pong table. (We stayed with Denise at Chalet Fontana). Interlaken is a big hub.

Wengen and Murren are car free so we chose from those for our experience.

Luzern is a good alternative, especially with kids, because of the variety offered there.

The Jungfrau region is spectacular. Luzern region has variety, including some high alps.

You might consider seeing both areas, although either one is good for more than a week in Summer.

The towns in the Jungfrau region are quite close to one another, so splitting bases usually doesn’t make much sense to me.
