We are finalizing a September trip to Switzerland. So far we have Zurich, Glacier express to Zermatt, Nyon, Vevey, Grindelwald and Lucerne, then back to Zurich. We have three days left and are debating between going north near Basel (from Grindelwald) or Ascona (from Lucerne)

Is the drive from Lucerne to Ascona and then to Zurich difficult? Also need some advice on a place to stay near Lucerne that is not too touristy.

Welcome to MySwissAlps! I have a few questions to be able to assist you better. How many days do you have in total for this trip? Where do you plan to enter and leave Switzerland? Are you planning to do this by car only? What are you interests/priorities?

20 day trip beginning and ending in Zurich. Planning to do the train for the first 6 days and then rent a car. Want to avoid moving every couple of days and very touristy places. Main interests are nature, photography, culture and trains. Like walking but not climbing.

Current plan is to stay in Zurich at the beginning, four nights and take day trips to Appenzell, etc. Then take the Glacier express from Chur to Zermatt (have already done the Bernina express on another trip to Como and northern Italy). 2 nights in Zermatt and then train to Geneva area.

Rent a car there…stay in Nyon, then Vevey (use that as a base to see Chillon castle, Gruyeres and Fribourg). Having some difficulty planning after that….? Grindelwald, Solothurn/Basel, Lucerne and end in Zurich (last night) or Grindelwald, Lucerne, Ascona and Zurich

Also do not want to stay in Lucerne…any suggestions?
