We are hoping to hike 2-3 of the trails in the Jungfrau on the last week of May 2020. We’d like feedback on the historical status of these trails on a typical sunny day in late May:

    Open and Dry

    Open and Wet/Damp

    Open and Muddy

    Closed

Below are the trails we are considering:

Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald (Eiger Trail)

    Murren to Tranzbodeli to Stechelberg

    First to Bachalpsee

    First to Grosse Scheidegg

    Harder Kulm Spine

Thank you for your guidance and sharing your experience!

    Darryl

We are in Wengen now, and Mannlichen to KS is out of the question – too much snow.

Mannlichen to Grindelwald is only possible on the road. The lift from Wengen up to Mannlichen is running, but the lifts from Mannlichen down to Grindelwald are not due to construction.

Murren to Grutsalp is reportedly open.

    May 2020 could be different.

    Hi Darryl,

It’s really very different each year. Chances for higher walks are much better from mid June. But on the other hand we’ve seen many spring seasons that were too warm due to the climate warming up. In such cases trails were accessible much earlier. But a cold spell like there was recently can happen at any time. Either way, there will be plenty of available walks, but not necessarily the ones you have in mind.

    Good afternoon PnBA and Arno

Many, many thanks for your feedback and guidance! It appears our most coveted hikes in the Jungfrau region will be a “hit or miss” call at the time of our visit in late May.

We would greatly appreciate any additional guidance you can offer re similar hikes (views and vistas) in other parts of Switzerland (ie Valais) that have traditionally opened by end of May. Please let us know your thoughts.

    Warm Regards,

    Darryl

    Good afternoon Arno

Given the potential for closed hiking routes (above 2K m) in late May, do you have any recommended locations to photograph sunrise/sunset over the alps in the Jungfrau region? We were planning the following sunrise/sunset photo opps: Schnyige Platte, Grosse Scheidegg, Harder Kulm. Please let us know if these locations are accessible by gondola/funicular/tram pre-dawn and post-sunset hours (please let us know same for any of the additional locations you may suggest for sunrise/sunset photos.

    Warm Regards,

    Darryl

    Hi Darryl,

There are many locations that are potentially good for a very nice sunset, even in the valley or on the lakes. If it’s clear then sometimes the mountain tops light up a bit for a few minutes (called Alpenglühen in German). You can watch this from countless places if the circumstances are ok. Beatenberg is another option to see the Alps from a distance, and you can get there by bus. Harder Kulm is indeed a good one too. Or Mürren, closer to the Jungfrau. The others you mentioned can’t be reached later at night. Please check the timetable for detailed schedules to any place you’d like to go to: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.
