Hello, I am very excited about an upcoming trip to Mürren, Griesalp and Lauterbrunnen. I am wondering what the normal policy is with regards to tipping for the room & service in a small Gasthaus.

    Many thanks!

    Monica

    Hi Monica,

Tipping is not required or expected at hospitality establishments in Switzerland as service charges are already included in the final bill. However it is very common to leave a small tip as a gesture for good service. The general rule of thumb is to round up to the nearest CHF1, CHF5 or CHF10 of the total bill. So for instance if the bill is CHF57, maybe you can tip an extra CHF3 to make it CHF60. It’s up to you.
