    Hello,

We are arriving in Lucerne around 2:00pm on October 13 and plan to take a boat trip after hotel check-in.

Would like some advice about two things – 1) what’s a recommended route for the boat trip that is an hour or less one-way? 2) If we’d like to be back in Lucerne in less than 2 hours, should we just take one-way boat trip and train back to Lucerne? Where should we get off the boat to board the train?

We will have Swiss Travel Passes.

    Thank you.

    Hi BibiL,

if you are visiting Pilatus, you can combine it with a boat trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus. See the description of ‘Golden Round Trip’.

You can also include a boat trip if you are visiting Rigi: http://www.myswissalps.com/rigi.

You’ll find the boat timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakelucerne/gettingthere. Look for the ‘Information on other websites’ box on the right side of the page. Vitznau from Lucerne is around 1 hr away.

    Dear Ildiko,

Thank you for your quick reply.

Is it possible to combine a visit to Rigi with a trip further to Appenzell and St Gallen?

    Kind regards

    BibiL

    Dear BibiL,

yes, you can continue your trip from Rigi to Appenzell. From Rigi Kulm it takes 3h 14 mins to reach Appenzell. You can partially travel by the Voralpen Express: http://www.myswissalps.com/voralpenexpress

St Gallen is around 30-40 mins away from Appenzell and you need to change a few times.

You can find the details in the timetable.

St Gallen – Lucerne is 2 hrs 18 mins by direct train, that is the whole route of the Voralpen Express.

    Dear Ildiko,

It does look doable, however, the 3 hours trip from Rigi Kulm to Appenzell is probably not an efficient use of our limited time in Switzerland.

What would you say to combining Appenzell and St Gallen with a visit to Säntis instead – for a whole day outing?

Maybe just do the boat trip then on its own on our first (half-)day in Lucerne, and leave some time for discovering the city.

    Thanks!

    HI BibiL,

Combining a day trip to St Gallen, Appenzell and Mt Säntis in one day is definitely doable.

You can plan the journey as follows:

Lucerne – St Gallen (roughly 2 hours)

St Gallen – Schwägalp – Säntis- (1 hour)

    Schwägalp – Appenzell (45 mins)

Appenzell – Lucerne (3 hours) via Voralpen Express

Please use the timetable to check train schedules and look for other suitable connections.

    Regards,

    Anna
