Hello, I will have three days in Lauterbrunnen in late October. I am arriving on the 28th from Lucern (spending 3 days in Lucern before this part of the trip). I am planning to spend one day taking a trip to Schlithorn and exploring the villages on the way (Murren and Gimmelwald). I will also do the hike from Lauterbrunnen to Stechlberg. I understand this can potentially be combined with the Schlithorn day, but I may do it on the first day instead to give me more time to explore the falls since the sun will set around 5 pm at this time. I am not sure what else to do in this area at this time of the year. The cable car from Wengen to Männlichen will not be operating then. Is a day trip to Grindelwald and/or Jungfrau worth doing in late October? Are there other things I should consider? I am very flexible. I like easy walks/hikes and exploring nature, but am also enjoy exploring cities.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer! Thanks!

Hi satori22! There’s still plenty to do in the (wider) area in late October. If weather is nice, a round trip to Kleine Scheidegg-Jungfraujoch-Grindelwald would be great indeed: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch, http://www.myswissalps.com/gr indelwald. You wouldn’t have to deal with the tourist crowds that travel up to Jungfraujoch in summer months and you’d just get to enjoy the magnificent views. Other than that, consider boat trips on Lake Brienz or Lake Thun (timetables will be restricted, but there are still options: http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakebrienz, http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakethun), a city visit to Bern (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rn) or even a day trip south to Zermatt (http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt).

I would consider a trip to Thun on Lake Thun to visit the castle which is one of the best I have visited and the old town nearby, going one way by boat from Interlaken and the other by train. I have done this twice and plan to do it again in mid-October.

Thanks for all your suggestions! After taking a look, I might be able to rearrange things to do Lauterbrunnen a few days earlier (oct 25-27), which is before most of the cable cars close on the 27th. It would mean I would go straight from Zurich airport to Lauterbrunnen instead of going to Lucern first when I arrive, though. Do you think it is worth trying to move it up a few days?

    Hello Satori22,

Yes, of course, this would be a good idea to enable you to enjoy some of the mountain transport in the Lauterbrunnen area before they close. Provided, you can change your hotel bookings.

Make sure you check out the timetable below, a very helpful tool for planning and also for seeing closure of cable cars (if you don’t get a connection for a specific date, the transport isn’t running).
