Hello, I will have three days in Lucern in late October. I am arriving early on the 25th and plan to spend that day exploring Lucern itself. For the other two days I would like to take day trips. I am thinking of doing at least one day to either Rigi, Pilatus or Titlis. Which one would be best this time of year? I know the cable cars will be down, but are these places still easily accessible?

I am not sure about the second day trip, and am looking for ideas of what would be best this time of year. I am pretty flexible and like both cities and nature. I am open to easy hikes that would be safe for a solo traveler, if there’s anything near by or day trips to other cities/areas like Montreux or Bern. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I know the weather will be unpredictable at this time and some things will be closed, but unfortunately these are the only times I can go. I appreciate any help anyone can offer! Thanks!

    Hi Satori22-

I’ll just deal with one point, but it is an important one, because it can affect your planning:

<<“I know the cable cars will be down, but are these places still easily accessible?”>>

Some cable cars in the Jungfrau region…such as the one from Wengen to Männlichen have their last runs of the season on Sunday the 27th. But, in general. most cable cars in Switzeralnd will be running at your dates and later. There may be some shutdowns for maintenance, here and there, more common in November.

To check for something you want to do that involves a cable car, use the timetable. It will also help you as you think about going on various day trips. You can see timing and frequency.

Check the specific journey for that day. If it return a message saying it can’t give you a schedule for that date, that is a clue.

You can check the My Swiss Alps links for Pilatus and the Rigi, too, and see if the cograil to Pilatus is running. I think it runs into November. The cableway runs all winter.

The Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad-First cable way runs on the 25th, 26th, and 27th.

    What cableways concern you?

    <<“<<some things will be closed,”>>

True in the high Alpine resort areas. Not true around Luzern. Don’t know details for Titlis…check the MySwiss Alps link:

The Rigi is an inhabited (farms etc) area all year, so the two rack railways don’t close. Better than Pilatus I think in the Autumn. The Pilatus is not worth doing (in my humble opinion) if the rack railway is not open as the steepness, history etc of the rack railway is traditionally one of the selling points of the Pilatus mountain .

Luzern – Bern is quick and easy – choice of two routes the Emmental line via Schüpfheim or the fast inter-city line via Zofingen. Late October the Emmental line might still be good for autumn tree colours

Hi satori22! Please find our personal recommendations for the Lake Lucerne area at http://www.myswissalps.com/la kelucerne. Most activities should still be accessible. As explained by Slowpoke, you’d best check the timetable to make sure. Apart from the general SBB timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable, we provide links to specific timetables under “More on other websites” at the Route tab of each of our attraction pages, e.g. http://www.myswissalp s.com/pilatus/gettingt here, http://www.myswissalp s.com/titlis/gettingth ere, http://www.myswissalp s.com/rigi/gettingther e, myswissalp s.com/boatlakelucerne/ gettingthere.

If weather isn’t good enough to get up in the mountains, city visits to Zurich (http://www.myswissalp s.com/zurich) and Bern (http://www.myswissalp s.com/zurich) are certainly interesting. Riding the entire Golden Pass (http://www.myswissalp s.com/goldenpass) to Montreux (http://www.myswissalp s.com/montreux) would be nice too, although it would be a long day.

    Hi Annika –

A return trip via Bern is faster.

    5 hours 7 minutes via Giswil and Zweisimmen;

Return via Bern either 2 hrs 41 or 46 minutes (through Chexbres) or 3 hours and 5 or 3 hours 16 minutes, through Lausanne.

The fastest routes back through Bern include the nice very short ride through the vineyards on the “Wine train” through Chexbres and Puidoux but require more changes.
