Hi – I have booked a trip for my family (husband & 3 year old daughter) for 5 days (Lucerne Grindelwald Zermatt Bern). I am desperately trying to figure out our itinerary but getting VERY overwhelmed with the options/getting around.

    1) My plan is to spend 2 nights in Lucerne (it will come out to 2 nights(b/c we get in late & 1 full day). I have a hotel booked in Old Town Lucerne (Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern) for the first night & then was thinking of booking our 2nd night at the Bürgenstock Resort so we can get the full lake experience. Is this wise or should I just keep one hotel? If so, would you suggest the Bürgenstock or the Hotel Schweizerhof?

    2) I would like to take a boat trip around Lake Lucerne (maximum 2-3 hour boat ride because I have a toddler). We will have Swiss Pass…I’ve read there are free boats. Is it best to take the free boat ride? I’ve also read about the Mt. Pilatus boat/railway. We will have several other days of mountain excursions & trains. Do we think this is a “must do” or if exploring Lucerne & the lake is sufficient.

    3) Any “must do” restaurants for lunch/dinner? I would ideally like a place with authentic cuisine & a view but I will have my toddler (so obviously nothing too fancy 🙂

Any other advice/tips is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Boats are not ‘free’ but you may be confusing this with the fact that they are free to board if your Swiss Travel Pass is valid for the day you take the boat trip.

Luzern is a better place to stay to do excursions to other places, especially as Bürgenstock is only 1 hour away. Bürgenstock is OK as a place to stay but only if you want to get the bus, or come down the funicular to the lake (Kehrsiten) to take trips to other places.

I think staying at both is pointless (especially as you would have to take everything with you) as they are so close together

The shuttle ferry to Kerhsiten (to reach Burgenstock) is not free. It’s 50% discount with Swiss Travel Pass. It’s a super modern space age looking craft.
