Hi
Is it practical to travel from Lucerne to Montreaux, in September, via Golden Pass in one day with carrying luggage? Or would it be too tiring?

Hi Mohinudeen f and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!
It depends on you. Many travellers love train travelling while others prefer to hike in nature or do some other things. In case you like train travelling, it won’t be tiring. It takes around 6 hrs with 3 changes.
You can read about the route description here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere.
If you do not want to take care of your luggage, you can use the luggage service of SBB: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage.
Make sure to have a rail pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses) or at least a Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass) for that day.
Take care,
Ildiko

Mohinudeen_fParticipant26 posts9 November 2022 at 12:17:15 #948225Thank you for letting me know about the SBB luggage service, which could be an option.
If there is new train with only one change option that will be brilliant!!
From Australia I am going to Lyon in France for th rugby World Cup, so between the two games I have 6 free days which I am planning to spend travelling in Switzerland.
Train from Lyon to Zermatt- 2 nights there. Zermatt to Lucerne- 2 nights there. Golden pass to Montreaux- 1night there and then back to Lyon. Lot of train travel but with it I guess??

as you are coming and going to France, make sure to check this one: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/france.
Yes, you’ll travel a lot by train, that is for sure. You could skip Lucerne and go to the Jungfrau region (staying in Interlaken for example), and then you could spare a few hours if you wish.Learn more about the Jungfrau region: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrauregion

Mohinudeen_fParticipant26 posts9 November 2022 at 23:54:57 #948227Hi iidiko
Skipping Lucerne and staying in interlaken sounds like a very good suggestion; I am a geologist, so love ricks and mountains 😀.
let me ask my wife for her preference too; lake of mountain? 😀😀😀
Removed userParticipant72625 posts10 November 2022 at 7:35:55 #948228Actually, there are two bigger lakes in the Jungfrau region too: Lake Brienz (http://www.myswissalps.com/lakebrienz) and Lake Thun (http://www.myswissalps.com/lakethun).:)
Removed userParticipant72625 posts10 November 2022 at 14:20:50 #948229I’m not sure I agree – sorry!
The Jungfrau region, whilst interesting geolocically, has become somewhat overrun by ‘themey’ stuff aimed at the general tourist. There are quite a few places within range of the Luzern area which are geologically interesting – eg Santis, Walensee, Ruinualta (Swiss Rhine Gorge near Chur). The Jura mountains are also very intersting geologically, and there are lovely lakes and mountains there that no one ever mentions on this forum!
And to respond to Ildiko’s comment about Lakes Thun and Brienz, they are not as interesting as the Vierwaldstadtersee (the correct name for ‘Lake Luzern’) which is surrounded by rocky features.
Mohinudeen_fParticipant26 posts10 November 2022 at 21:41:47 #948230Thank you for your perspective also 1960man. I will definitely stay 2 nights in Zermatt. Both Lucerne and interlaken appear to have pros and cons with respect to my travel itinerary. The suggestions from all of you in the forum will help me make the final ‘hard’ decision.
