Hello Youjian and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You can get from Lugano to Varenna by train via Milan or Monza.

You can also get a bus from Lugano to Menaggio and take a ferry to Varenna.

    See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy and http://www.rome2rio.com/map/L ugano/Varenna.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

GPE train gets to Lugano is 16.38, we take C12 to Menaggio, get there is 17.40, but the last ferry leaves at 17.35. I don’t get why the ferry has to leave 5 minutes earlier.

Train to Milan to Varenna will be 4 hours long.

Have you considered following the Bernina Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress) route on regular trains? Tirano to Varenna is but a short train ride. See attached.

Or you could follow the Gotthard Panorama Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress) route on regular trains so as to arrive earlier in Lugano.

Thank you for the suggestions for the 2 express trains.

How did you get the train routes? I have hard time to check the time table.

Could you please get the train and boat time table from Luzern to Lugano for me? Prices too.

I noticed that changes between stops has very short time to catch the next train. Do i have enough time to get t0 different platform?

Can I get some of the scenery views if I take the regular trains?

Do I need digital photo to buy the half card or swisspass? I am leaving USA to Zurich on Monday, Sept. 9. Do I have time to buy the passes through email? Can the hotel print out the pass for us?

    HI Youjian222!

Are you using the advanced timetable at the right at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable? That’s the official SBB timetable, listing all connections. You may need to add some via-stations though to see the actual panoramic train routes. You’ll see it explained at our timetable page, and route descriptions are provided at http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress/ gettingthere (and http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress/gettingth ere, if you’re considering Rockoyster’s tip).

Apart from the SBB timetable, you can use separate boat/train timetables we link to from http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress/ gettingthere (see “More on other websites”) and http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakelucerne/gettingt here.

Yes, you’ll see the exact same scenery if you travel by regular trains. You won’t have the comfortable seats, larger windows and explanation on the route though. The differences are explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress.

You don’t need any photo when purchasing your Swiss Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass. You’re still in time to order online, and I would advise to do so as it’s much easier. You’ll save time compared to a purchase at the railway station after arrival, and you’ll have an electronic backup to store on your phone in case of loss or damage of your printed paper pass. Please find retailers at http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price and http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard/price. These retailers provide delivery or your digital passes within minutes: https://www.happyrail. com/en/pass/europe/swi tzerland/swiss-travel-pass-consecutive and https://shop.switzerla ndtravelcentre.com.

With the help of this forum I now have a plan in place on Sept 15 from Murren through Lucerne to Varenna. We will connect to the 12:18 in Lucerne to Lugano arriving 14:26 and have reservations on the 15:31 Palm Express to Menaggio (no charge) with ample time to make the ferry. We will keep an eye out for you. In Lucerne now.

If I take the regular trains from Luzern to Verrena , skipping GPE scenic train, I am afraid I will miss the connections at some points, because the connections time are very short.

The train has no connections to Lugano. Walk out of train station in Lugano and the bus station/stop is 5 minute walk. That is one reason I chose this travel plan. I didn’t study taking the train to Varenna. My experience on trains so far is that they are on time and easy to connect easy to use – particularly with STP. Relax and enjoy:).
