We are visiting Switzerland in mid October and staying in Lucerne. We want to visit Zermatt and see the Matterhorn. Can anyone tell me if this can be done in one day? Would we be able to take an early train, go up to Matterhorn, and return all in the same day.

Hi Mom4spice and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Yes, it will be a bit of a long day but can work- almost 3.5 hours one-way). Use the Swiss railways timetable to plan the trip by train from Lucerne to Zermatt.

The easiest option to get good views of the Matterhorn (you can’t go up the Matterhorn) is to go up the Gornergrat (which is right across from the Zermatt train station).

    Yes, it’s possible

Standard routeing is 3 hours 14 mins journey time: route IR15 train every hour from Luzern departing at .00 (ie exactly on the hour) to Bern, change to a route IC8 train Bern – Visp. Change at Visp into the MGB narrow gauge train to Zermatt.

    eg Luzern dep 07.00

    Bern 08.00 / 08.06

    Visp 09.02 / 09.08

    Zermatt arrive 10.14

    pattern repeated every hour

Be warned – it’s a long day if the Matterhorn is surrounded in cloud all day…
