    Hello,

We’re planning a day trip to Luzern and an excursion to Pilatus and we’re trying to determine if the Bernese – Oberland Regional Pass will cover all portions of the trip.

On this site’s link to Mt. Pilatus travel, there’s reference to a “Golden Round Trip” from Luzern by boat to Alpnachstad, and cog wheel train up to Pilatus. Then, returning by cable car down to Fräkmüntegg and change to the gondola to Kriens. Then the bus line #1 back to the Luzern train station.

There’s mention of what portion’s of that trip are covered by the “Swiss Travel Pass” but no specific reference to the Bernese – Oberland Regional Pass.

We will be based in Grindelwald and we know that the trains to and from Luzern would be at no cost with the B-O Pass. But what about the boat to Alpnachstad, the cog train up to Pilatus and the cable ways down, along with the bus back to Luzern?

Since the cable ways are discounted 50% with the Swiss Travel Pass, is it the same with the B-O Pass?

    Thank You in Advance,

    Are2

    Hello Are2,

The reason you can’t find the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland listed in the price section of Mount Pilatus, is, because it offers you free travel only on the regular trains to either Alpnachstad or Lucerne and not on the mountain transportation itself, nor on the lake.

For detailed validity of the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland please use this link, incl. a helpful map:

Find out about prices and purchase for regular trips to Mount Pilatus in this link:

The Golden Roundtrip you mention is absolutely fantastic and one of my favourites, so I believe worth the extra cost!

    Hope this answers your questions.

    Best,
    Steph

    Hi Steph,

Thanks for that information. I’ll check the links you’ve provided, but I’ll quickly ask the question here as well.

Does the “Swiss Travel Pass” offer any more comprehensive coverage for the lake and the mountain transportation?

    Regards, Are2

    Hi Are2,

    You’re welcome!

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass covers more mountain and lake journeys, as it’s a “national” pass, whereas the others are more focussed on regions.

Find detailed coverage of the Swiss Travel Pass here:

And use the following link for a general overview of passes as well as a fantastic “How to choose your rail pass in 5 steps” instruction, providing a fabulous spreadsheet for detailed calculations. You need to have a quite clearly mapped out itinerary for this, however.

Happy planning and calculating. We’re here for further input.
