We are disembarking a river cruise 8/18/18 in Lyon. Booked the next 2 nights at Victoria Jungfrau Hotel Interlaken.

Please recommend which rails and passes to use to get from Lyon to Interlaken…We are guessing we can go on a high speed train from Lyon to Geneva. Then switch trains to get to Montreux. From Montreux, we’d like to take the Golden Pass Line to Interlaken. Where can I find information on time tables for these trains, and which passes to buy?

Hi Lauren9883 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Yes, the most direct route to Interlaken is via Geneva and will take about 5.5 hours. To go via Montreux and on the Golden Pass route search the timetable for Lyon to Interlaken Ost VIA Zweisimmen. https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable. It will add about 2.5 hours to the trip but you will be on the Golden Pass route (details here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/goldenpass/getti ngthere)

As for a rail pass, are you only in Switzerland for the 2 nights in Interlaken? Where are you going after that?

To know which rail pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

Thank you so much for all of this valuable information. After Interlaken, we are staying 1 night in Zurich and flying out from there.

    Ah ok.

The more travel you do the more a rail pass gets attractive over just point to point tickets.
If you are doing some travel in Interlaken, perhaps to nearby mountains, a Swiss Travel Pass for 3 days could make sense for you (certainly it is the simplest option).

Read more about it here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass and be sure to click on the “where it’s valid” tab to see the PDF map of what routes are fully covered.
