trying to get some understanding of how to take Bernina Bus or is Palm express from Menaggio to catch Bernina Express- is it one ticket-do we book in advance, does the timetable switch last week of April? Our flight leaves from Zurich on April 29. How many days travel to allow to get to Zurich for Sunday am flight?

Use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you haven’t used it before it will pay to read the instructions on that page before delving into the timetable.

The Bernina Express bus Lugano to Tirano does not stop to pick up passengers along the route.

The Palm Express (Bus631) runs only Saturday, Sunday, Monday at that time of year. It departs Lugano at 12:00 bound for St Moritz (not Tirano) and stops at Menaggio. Reservations required.

If you want to take the Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur you are going to have to get to Lugano to catch the 10:00am Bernina bus departure (runs daily).

If you got the Bernina bus on 28 April you could reach Zurich that night but you would have to stay overnight in Lugano on 27th most likely.

Another option for you may be to take a ferry across Lake Como to Varrena (my Italian geography is not so good) and train to Tirano.

Thanks- see that there are two trains from Tirana that day… any thoughts on that?

Can you reach Tirano by 10:06 from Menaggio?

The 10:06 BEX only goes as far as St Moritz. But you could then get a regular train on to Chur.
