    Milano Malpensa – Lugano

    Greetings!!

I have been using the SBB app to calculate transportation and routes. I will have the HFC and the BO pass to start on the day we leave Lugano. I have some questions/direction please (:

Malpensa to Lugano – It looks like there is a train leaving directly from Terminal 1 to Lugano (Urban Train 50). Is this correct? Should we purchase the ticket ahead of time on the app? We have traveled in Italy before and purchased the tickets ahead of time, but I wasn’t sure on the Swiss ones coming from Milan.

Second part of the journey… (Locarno to Interlaken)the app is routing us via Domossosola. I know I have to buy the ticket up to Brig. Do I need a printed ticket from Brig to Interlaken or will the Berner Oberland pass QR code be enough?

    thank you so much!

Yes, Malpensa – Lugano is a local Swiss train that crosses the border. All trains in the area belongs to a cross border network – details here

Yes, Brig – Interlaken is valid on BO pass, but ONLY via the mountain route via Kandersteg

    Hi Jayleecab,

Yes, it’s possible to purchase the train ticket from Malpensa to Lugano in advance from the SBB app.

As for the trip from Locarno to Interlaken via Domodossola, the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland is only valid from Brig to Interlaken. So you need a ticket from Locarno to Brig. With the Swiss Half Fare Card, the ticket is discounted. Please take note however that the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland is only valid on the BLS regional train from Brig (which goes over the mountain) and not valid on the fast trains (through the tunnel). If you want to travel with the fast train, you need a ticket from Locarno to Spiez. The rest of the journey will be free with the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland. There’s no need to get tickets for the last part of the journey. Just present the regional pass during ticket inspection.

You can read about transportation in Ticino here: https://www.myswissalps.com/ticino/travel.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thank you Anna for the clarification.

So are there many trains marked “express” or just one from Brig? I was looking at the abbreviations and I want to make sure to get on the right train. I’m trying to familiarize with all the abbreviations.

There is an IC 8, IC 61…

I have the Bls app, should I try to navigate with that for this part of the journey?

    Thank you for your patience!

    Hi Jayleecab,

You can use the RegioExpress Lötschberger for free with the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland. The RegioExpress Lötschberger trains are indicated by ‘RE’ (RegioExpress) in the timetable.

In the SBB timetable, if you click on the + sign, you get more information about the route and the trains.

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko

Hi Jayleecaab! In addition: the ‘timetable’ block at http://www.myswissalps.com/lotschberger/gettingthere explains how to identify the RegioExpress Lötschberger trains. And you’ll find explanation about the types of trains and their abbreviations used in the Swiss timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/traintypes.
