What would be the best itinerary to travel up Pilatus from our Grindelwald base . Would it be best to drive to Lucerne , or take the train , We plan to buy a Swiss travel / flexi pass. Can anyone suggest what the fare would be for the round trip Lucerne – Pilatus – Lucerne ? Thanks

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass then taking the train makes sense.

Use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. Grindelwald to Pilatus Kulm will show you the fastest route. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on that page.

The fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare.

Pilatus prices are at http://www.pilatus.ch/en/book ing/prices/ and will be 50% discount off full-fare with a Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hi Pomkitanner,

Are you going to have a rental car as well as the Swiss Travel Pass Flex; or you are considering renting a car just for one day to go to Pilatus? If it is the 2nd option do follow Rockoyster’s advice.

With the STP Flex, you just pay for the mountain trip at 50% off. Trains to Alpnachstad or Kriens would be free. Plus if you take the train you can go up from Alpnachstad and down to Kriens making it a round-trip (a hassle if you have to get back to your parked car). http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus/gettingthere

We shall have a car for our 6 week trip. Our stay in Switzerland is for 5 days and we plan to have a 4 day consecutive Swiss card . If we set out early , is it possible to do the return trip in half a day on the train ? Thanks

    Hi Pomkitanner,

Half a day is a bit tight. It takes at least 3.5 hours to reach the top of the mountain. You can find all details if you use the timetable Rockoyster referred to.
