Our visit to Mt. Pilatus was absolutely wonderful except for a little hitch at the beginning.

We had STP 2nd class tickets. To go to Mt. Pilatus we paid 36 chf/pp (half fare price because of STP) and were given a paper ticket.
We took Bus #1 to go to Kriens to get on board the cable cars.
I was breathing heavily on the short walk to the building. A reminder for those who have problems walking on barely sloped streets. Had to take a puff from my inhaler.
Lines were long so we stood in queue expecting for someone to take our paper tickets and give us a different ticket to board the cable. We saw the sign – Exchange SBB tickets but did not understand until we reached front of the line. Everyone was scanning their cards, entering and boarding the cable car. So, we had to go back to the window, exchange our paper ticket to a scannable card and get back in line.
Our card included cogwheel ride. When we reached Pilatus Kulm we went to the window again where we were given another card to get in line marked Alpnachstad. Those who did not have it included on their ticket can purchase tickets at the window there.
    Pilatus Kulm was awesome.
Boat from Alpnachstad back to Lucerne on Lake Lucerne was breathtaking.
Serene, beautiful, peaceful journey took away our jet lag.

    Hi NeeluGarg,

Yes, indeed, it’s best to pass by the ticket window unless you’re absolutely sure you have a ticket that works on the turnstiles. Sometimes you will need to exchange it. Thanks for the heads up! Glad to hear you enjoyed your day to the Pilatus!

Hi Harsimran! If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card (I suppose that’s what you mean: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard?), then you can just buy regular 50% discounted tickets from Alpnachstad to Lucerne. You can do so at the Lucerne railway station, upon showing your Swiss Half Fare Card. A ticketing machine will work too; make sure you get a 50% discounted ticket in that case.
