Hi My sons and I will be visiting Lucerne from the afternoon of the 6th November until the 9th November.

We will be arriving from Lauterbrunnen, where hopefully we can go up Schilthorn .

We would like to do one of the mountain trips from Lucurne as well. , which would you recommend ?

I am a little confused as to maintenance schedule for the railway and cog cars. We will have a car, but would also like to do a lake cruise, any suggestions ?

Would it be advantageous to purchase a Swiss travel pass for three days ?

    Thank you in advance

    Flash Harry

Hi Flash Harry and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can read in more detail about the mountains around Lucerne here: http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne/activities – it should help you decide.

So just Titlis is inaccessible at the time of your visit.

Lake Lucerne is always a good idea with good weather. Have a read here: http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakelucerne

If you are going to be driving during your stay (at least as far as you can with the mountain transport) then usually the Swiss Half Fare Card is your best bet: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard but if you decide to park the car and use trains etc to go everywhere then the Swiss Travel Pass is a very good idea: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

    Hi Flash Harry

My husband and I are currently in Lucerne and has recently been to Mt Rigi and Mt Pilatus. We like Mt Rigi its beasutiful and has got its own appeal .we took advantage of our day pass and went to different areas of Rigi using the trains and cable cars.

Personally we prefer Mt Pilatus more for it spectacular scenery and the different activities on offer like the toboggan ride and adventure playground if you have the time and money to indulge yourselves. My husband and I did a bit of hiking and basically relaxed and enjoyed the magnificent views.

Schilthornbahn closes for maintenance on November 12. You’re good!

    Thanks for the replies,

I am thinking that we should wait to see what the weather will be like before our adventure up the mountains. As we will have a car we will be able to take the train up .

So happy that we miss the maintenance on Schilthornbahn.

You can park at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg.

Unless the Brunig Pass is closed due to snow( extremely unlikely at 1000 meters altitude) or there is some kind of serious road repair work te trip from Luzern to Lauterbrunnen Bahnhof is about 1 hour faster by car than by train.

To go up to Schilthorn, by either route, you start by cableway, not by train. If you choose to go up from Lauterbrunnen, after the first cableay, there is a train between Grütschalp and Mürren. Once you get to Mürren by that route, there is an easy walk of about 600 meters to the station for the cableways up to Birg and Schilthorn or down to Gimmelwald and Stechelberg. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

    Thank you Slowpoke,

We are staying at Lauterbrunnen, so will start there, will look at the timetable. Will the weather have an impact on the view ?

We then will go across to Lucerne to stay a few days and see Mt Rigi or Mt Pilatus and drive to Rhine falls.

    Yes.

Check with the Tourist Office in Lauterbrunnen, or at the train station for details. The weather comes in layers…may be good on top and bad below, or, vice versa. And, it can change frequently and relatively unpredictably on short notice.
