Hello again,

Near the end of 2 weeks in Switzerland, I was thinking of

1. Murren to Bern for one overnight as folks were gushing about the town.

2. Then Golden Pass train to Geneva

3. Then Geneva to Chillon Chateau day trip

4. Fly out from Geneva

My questions:

• There doesn’t appear to be a direct boat ride from Geneva to Chillon: is that correct? And it would be a full day either way? So not logistically efficient? Or am I missing something?
• Would it be fairly easy to stop off at Montreux (bags put into lockers ), walk/boat/bus to Chillon, back to Montreux then go to Geneva via train? How long of a day would this be?
  • In this scenario, is the Montreux/Chillon boat ride visually worthwhile?
  • I can’t find a boat from Montreux to Geneva–is there one?

Hi Meemskirk,

You are right. All-lake lines have been phased out. From Geneva to Chillon you must change at Lausanne-Ouchy. There is a good connection as far as I remember. Same for Montreux to Geneva, change at Lausanne.

Lockers in Montreux are at the train station, not the boat docks.

The approach to Chillon by boat is worthwhile (in my opinion, that is).

Hmm; when I search it shows Montreaux to Lausanne but nothing to Geneva from Lausanne (or Montreaux)…

Looks like a train is my best option?

Hello Meemskirk,

What dates will you be travelling, may I ask? This will impact the answer if you can do the whole journey by boat, as the summer schedule on the Lake of Geneva starts on the 15th of June. From then on the connection Geneva – via Lausanne Ouchy (change boat) – Chillon castle (passing Montreux) and vice-versa is available entirely by boat.

If you use our advanced timetable in below link you can then go to “full timetable”, select “advanced search” there and only select the boat as transportation to see if you have boat-only connections. If no connection is possible due to the date, it will tell you.

Hi Meemskirk,

For that date the attached timetable will help. The connections are no longer really recommendable on that date (my opinion) and I would do parts of the journey by train, as you previously have said.

It should be remembered how big Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) is. It is around 80 km end to end. The all-lake steamer were abolished as impractical as it takes too long to go from Geneve to the east end of the lake. You get good views from the train, especially on the section where the railway is right next to the lake shore (ie Lausanne – Vevey and Territet – Villeneuve)
