    Hello Fellow Travelers,

On Sunday 23June2019, we will be traveling from Murren to Venice. We will need to leave early, as we have to arrive in Venice before 9pm. My question concerns buying the train ticket. We will have the Berner Oberland Regional Pass, which should give us free travel to Frutigen. The map shows we could get free travel all the way to Brig, but that route would bypass the lotschberg-basis tunnel. And since we already have a full day of travel, need to take the most direct route. Question 1) What is the most direct route? Question 2) how and where do we buy the ticket on a sunday morning given that we have the BO Regional Pass?

    Thanks

    Mike

Hello Mike and welcome to MySwissAlps,

    1. The direct route via Visp would be the fastest route. Via Kandersteg is more scenic. The SBB timetable will give you the time “penalty”.

    2. You can buy a ticket from Brig to Domodossola anytime you like at any station you like or on-line. You don’t need to buy it on the day of your travel. For Domodossola to Venice you should buy well in advance to get the best price. See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy.

    Hi Mike,

As Rockoyster states you can buy point-to-point tickets for your journey in advance
    – online or at any train station in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/switzerland /price
    – you can also buy advanced dated tickets at the ticketing machines in Switzerland upon arrival, just make sure you choose the required travelling date.

Use this timetable link to find out about the fastest route:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

And you’ve already found the map to check how far your Regional Bernes Oberland Pass will take you:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/re gionalpassberneseoberl and/validity
Please note that Rockoysters “fastest route” from above post is not included in the pass (see map).

And do get your tickets for Italy asap, as Rockoyster suggests.

    Happy travelling.

    Best,
    Steph

Thanks Rockoyster and Steph for your detailed response. I am still getting used to this idea of pre-purchasing train tickets. I traveled Europe several times (20 years ago!) and never pre-purchased a single train trip. The Italy portion of the trip is not for sale yet, but I’ll purchase that as soon as it becomes available.

    Thanks

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

    You’re more than welcome.

You can, of course, buy simple point-to-point tickets for your visit if you feel more comfortable with it. I would then look into the Swiss Half Fare Card, offering you an almost overall discount of 50% of transportation.

    Hi Mike,

I think train fares have become more commercial over the last 20 years. Pre-purchase of point to point tickets is still rarely a must, but it is recommended for some of the long distance (cross-border) transfers. You may pay much less if you order your ticket in time. Apart from that your preferred train could be booked out theoretically, if you wait until the last minute. So, you’re not forced into buying in advance but the savings might be appealing 🙂
