Greetings! Both me and my wife are visiting the far east and since we plan on flying Swiss, we thought of breaking the return journey in Zurich. We have 3 nights/4 days and we are struggling to plan our short trip to Switzerland. The trip would most likely be during the second week of November. We would like to explore whatever is worth checking out in November, it doesn’t have to be Zurich only.

We looked up Lucern/Luzern and Grindelwald on these forums and online. Turns out the main attraction (First Cliff Walk) would be closed while we are there based on their operating hours posted online. Are there any alternatives? What places can be tour and explore from Zurich during those 3 days/nights in November?

    Would appreciate suggestions/feedback. Thanks.

Hi Peaktravels and welcome to MySwissAlps!

There are some mountains you can explore (it sounds like that is your hope?). However, a lot of things are shut down in November – too early to ski and too late to hike so you will be limited in choices.

Do be prepared for cold, rainy weather – the mountain tops will be 0 degrees or colder – hard to pack for that on your way to Asia.

Some mountains are open year-round but will close for a week or two in November for maintenance – which days will you be here?

I think Lucerne is your best bet for a few nights. See what there is to do in the area here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/lucerne/activiti es. Day trips can be done to Bern (https://www.myswissalp s.com/bern) or Montreux (https://www.myswissalp s.com/montreux) as well on the Golden Pass route: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass

Lucas, thank you for the prompt response. We couldn’t understand why places would be closed around that time, yet open for the ski season few weeks later. With that in mind, we are now thinking of visiting Zurich earlier. Our potential dates are October 2nd through 6th. Is this a good favorable time to explore some places? We looked at Grindelwald as it seems to be a few hours train ride from ZRH but I am open to other places. Not looking to do some major mountain hiking but anything worth 3 days/night checking out/staying at would be great. any suggestions please?

If one can’t ski or hike in Switzerland one often doesn’t bother coming – Especially the Swiss don’t go into the mountains at that time of year. The tourists are so few that many hotels and restaurants close as it is too expensive to operate otherwise. It is also a great time to do cable car or train maintenance as it inconveniences a lot fewer people.

Early October is a great time to visit though. Grindelwald is quite popular, as is Lucerne. The mountains and cable cars will be running and hiking trails will all be open so you’ll have your pick of what to do. Even higher mountain hikes can be fairly easy.

Have a look at what to do in Grindelwald here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/grindelwald/acti vities
If you want more of a city trip with a mountain or two to visit, Lucerne might be the better choice for you. Grindelwald is best for people who want to spend all their time outdoors in the mountains.
