    Hi there
Just wondering from the itinerary below do you recommend an 8 day pass. I’ve been told to buy a pass by a friend who has just come back from 5 days there, then not buy a pass so totally confused about it.
Arrive inti Zurich- 2 nights accom booked there
Day 1/2 – day trips -travel to lucerne , Mt piltus visit,
Day 3- travel lugano for 2 nights
Day 3- do part pf the Bernina express on route to lugano
    Day 4 – day trip
Day 5 – travel to murren to stay for 3 nights
Day6/7/8- explore The region- Interlacken, Wengen,Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald. jungfraujoch – hike, train, cog rides.
Day 9 – travel to Vevey 2 nights accom booked here
Day9/10- explore Lake Geneva, maybe visit Zermatt
Day 11- travel to Geneva in the afternoon to return home.

Some of our day trips may not be achievable , just other places we’d like to see.

Is the 8 day pass the best option? Or 4 days?

Hi deldel56! In nearly all cases it’s much cheaper to use a rail pass than to buy regular full-fare tickets. This certainly goes for your itinerary as well. There are several options and you’ve have to make detailed calculations to make sure which is most economical. The process is explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.

At first glance, I’d say the combination below would might work:

Mind that the Montreux Riviera Card won’t provide free traveling to Zermatt, so a day trip Vevey-Zermatt would be rather costly. Nor would the trip to Geneva be free all the way. If you’d rather have those trips covered as well, you might consider a 15 day Swiss Travel Pass for the whole of your journey instead (which would be cheaper than an 8 day + a 3 day Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price). A Swiss Half Fare Card could work too, but you’d have to get discounted tickets for each trip in that case: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard.

Doing part of Bernina Express route on way from Zurich to Lugano? What “part” did you have in mind? The normal route would be Zurich to Chur to Tirano to Lugano. That’s an entire days travel.

In fact if you go Zurich to Lugano to Mürren you are going to be spending an awful lot of time in trains.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel, find fares* and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. *SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, mobile app allows you to nominate full or half-fare and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare.
