    Hello

I am travelling to Montreux on Friday 5th July for the weekend. On Saturday the 6th July I want to catch a train from Montreux and go across to go up the Schilthorn for lunch. In the afternoon I would like to fit in another visit to a mountain site e.g. Jungfrau or another special place.

Can you please advise the quickest train route from Montreux please and what stations I need to use to get up the Schilthorn as well as any other place. I have a 3 Day Travel Pass so it would be great if you could tell me what is not covered by the pass please.

Once the visits are over I will need to return to Montreux on the Saturday evening

Any help would be brilliant thank you

    Regards

    Kev

Hello Kev and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel. It will give you the fastest route from Montreux to Interlaken Ost which is the gateway to the Jungfrau Region.

The map you can download from http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity will show the routes within the region and what the Swiss Travel Pass covers.

From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren (train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). From Mürren you can easily visit Schiltorn (don’t miss The Thrill Walk at Birg) and even Allmendhubel if you have time. In between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen the bus stops at the Trummelbach Falls. Well worth a look. The entire circuit and side trips are free with the Swiss Travel Pass apart from the Allmendhubel Funicular (50% discount) and the Falls (modest entry fee).

Get an early start and expect a long day.

You won’t be able to fit in Schilthorn and ‘Jungfrau’ (if for the latter you mean going up to Kleine Scheidegg area) in one day. It takes between 3 hours 45 and 4 hours 15 minutes Montreux – Schilthorn (minimum 5 changes of train/vehicle). Plus time for lunch.

I strongly suggest you restrict your trip to that and don’t risk ‘spoiling’ the day by trying to cram too much in (remember you will be at high altitude) .

Many people don’t realise that you get a superb view of the Jungfrau/Mönch/Eiger from Murren village – without having to spend $$$ on the Jungfraujoch trip

    Hi Kev,

I would also say that your plan is very ambitious, maybe a little too ambitious, but then again you might be so full of energy that you can do it. Use the timetable provided by Rockoyster or below link to figure out detailed traveling times:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Also see below link for a “one day Jungfraujoch region” recommendation as well as some general input about the area for inspiration:

Find input about the two destinations you mention here:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn

Hope this helps you set up this day trip from Montreux.

Thank you Rockoyster. The “circuit” you mentioned sounds very interesting. Assuming we arrive in Interlaken Ost before 11am – which way woold you do the circuit please including Schilthorn.

we have no restriction on return time to Montreux

    thank you for your help

    Hi Kev,

I would do the circuit in the direction I described. You should be at Schilthorn in time for lunch.

If you leave Montreux at 8:43 you can be in Interlaken by 11:00 with only 2 changes at Visp and Spiez. Enjoy.
