    Hi everyone,

Will there be any open grocery stores around Christmas/NYE time in Switzerland? Maybe some sort of 24-7 convenience store? We’ll be traveling Switzerland around that time and expect all formal restaurants, etc., will probably be closed. However, in case of emergencies, it would be great to have this info in advance.

    Thanks!

    Al

    Hello BamT

Dec. 25-26, Jan 1st and Jan 2 are public holidays in Switzerland. Some restaurants, but not all, close. Some stay open, and, among them, some have special menus.

Most stores would be closed on those days as on all sundays, with some exceptions: all major and middle size railway stations have a grocery store. Family-owned and -run stores can be open (the idea being: you are not allowed to exploit others, but you can exploit yourself). Stores opened 24 hours are extremely rare, I would know any. Good hotels will provide breakfast and meals at least for their guests. Large tourist resorts have stores opened on sundays and holidays.

    There are pharmacies on duty.

    Don’t worry.

Thank you for the info, Snowman. We’ve surveyed the areas we’ll be staying and spotted a few grocery stores and pharmacies nearby. We’ll know for sure their full schedules once we get there.
